Counselling

LGBTQIA+ counselling

A safe space to discuss challenges, discover yourself and grow – with counsellors who are part of, or deeply embedded in, queer communities. Not tick-box inclusion. The real thing.

Counselling that doesn't need a glossary

You shouldn’t have to spend your sessions educating your counsellor about your identity, your relationships or your community. At Invictus Health, our counsellors are LGBTQIA+ themselves or deeply embedded in queer communities, so you can get straight to what you actually came for.

Sometimes what you bring relates to identity – coming out, gender, transition, faith and culture, family acceptance, or living between worlds. Often it doesn’t: queer people get anxious, burnt out, grieve and struggle in relationships like everyone else. Either way, you deserve support that affirms who you are rather than treating it as the problem.

Our approach is affirming, trauma-informed and grounded in evidence-based therapies including CBT, ACT and relational approaches. We understand the real effects of discrimination, family rejection, homophobia and transphobia on mental health – and we know that your identity is not a disorder.

What we can work on together

Identity and coming out

Exploring sexuality or gender at any age and any stage – including questioning, coming out (or choosing not to), and navigating family, culture and faith.

Gender and transition

Affirming support through social, medical or legal transition, and the feelings, relationships and decisions that come with it.

Minority stress and discrimination

The cumulative weight of homophobia, transphobia, microaggressions and vigilance – and its real effects on anxiety, mood and self-worth.

Relationships and community

Dating, partnerships, chosen family, non-traditional relationship structures, and conflict or belonging within queer communities.

Family of origin

Rejection, conditional acceptance, cultural and intergenerational pressures, and deciding what relationships you want to rebuild or release.

Everything else

Work stress, grief, low mood, neurodivergence – everyday human struggles, with a counsellor who simply gets the queer part for free.

Process

What happens during your counselling journey

First contact

You call or fill out our form. Tell us what's happening and what you need. We listen without judgment and answer your questions about how we work.

Assessment session

We meet and talk through your situation in detail. This helps us understand your challenges and decide on the best approach for you moving forward.

Regular sessions

You attend regular sessions where we develop strategies and skills tailored to your needs. Between sessions, you practise what you've learned in daily life.

Moving forward

As you gain confidence and tools, sessions may reduce in frequency. You'll always have access to support when you need it, whether that's months or years later.

Frequently asked questions

Are your counsellors actually LGBTQIA+?

Our counselling team includes counsellors who are LGBTQIA+ themselves and counsellors deeply embedded in queer communities. If it matters to you to work with a queer counsellor specifically, tell us when you book and we’ll match you.

Is this conversion therapy or anything like it?

No. Conversion practices are harmful and are banned in Victoria. Our counselling is affirming: your sexuality and gender are not problems to be fixed, and we will never treat them as such.

I'm questioning and not sure of my identity. Is that enough reason to come?

Absolutely. You don’t need a label, a certainty or a crisis. Counselling is a good place to explore questions at your own pace, with no agenda about where you should land.

Can my partner(s) come too?

Yes. We offer relationship counselling for couples and we welcome LGBTQIA+ relationships and non-traditional relationship structures. See our relationship counselling page or ask us when booking.

Is it confidential? Nobody in my family knows.

Yes. What you share stays between you and your counsellor, with rare exceptions only when someone’s safety is at risk. We will never disclose your identity to family members.

What does it cost?

Individual counselling is $80-$120 per session. No GP referral is needed, and telehealth is available Australia-wide if you’d prefer not to attend in person.
