FAQs

Find answers to common questions about our assessment services.

What is neuropsychological testing used for?

Neuropsychological testing serves several important purposes.

It helps diagnose conditions such as ADHD, learning disorders, dementia, and the cognitive effects of brain injury or neurological disease.

It is also frequently used to support applications for funding through schemes like the NDIS, WorkCover, the TAC, or for return-to-work and compensation claims.

Beyond diagnosis, testing is valuable for guiding rehabilitation programs, assessing decision-making capacity for legal or medical purposes, and monitoring changes over time in progressive conditions.

What are the main types of neuropsychological tests?

Neuropsychological assessments provide a detailed evaluation of all major areas of cognitive functioning, including memory, attention, executive functioning, language, and problem solving abilities.

In addition to general cognitive assessments, neuropsychologists also carry out specialised evaluations. These may include capacity assessments, such as assessing a person’s ability to make decisions, manage their finances, or live independently, often for legal, medical, or guardianship purposes.

Other types of specialised assessments can include forensic evaluations for court matters, as well as vocational or educational assessments to support planning for returning to work or identifying appropriate supports in an educational setting.

When are neuropsychological assessments or tests needed?

Neuropsychology assessments or tests are often carried out when there may be signs or problems with a person’s cognitive abilities – whether it’s thinking, remembering, problem-solving, or anything else.

Neuropsychological evaluations are also required by those in the legal and insurance industries as there may be compensation involved with impairments of cognitive abilities due to injury, illness, or disease caused by another party.

At Invictus Health, we offer neuropsychological assessments for the medico-legal industry in Melbourne and Australia including:

  • NDIS applications or other funding applications
  • Decision Making Capacity assessments for tribunals and other legal matters

What conditions can neuropsych testing diagnose?

A neuropsychologist can help contribute to the diagnosis of a variety of conditions by assessing cognitive functioning and related symptoms.

These include intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and specific learning disorders, as well as cognitive and neurological conditions such as mild cognitive impairment, early-stage dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke-related changes and brain injuries.

Neuropsychologists can also provide valuable insight into the cognitive effects of mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and schizophrenia.

For complex conditions such as Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), neuropsychological assessment plays an important role in a diagnosis, however a diagnosis typically requires input from a multidisciplinary team including neurologists, psychologists, and other specialists.

Does a neuropsychological evaluation test for ADHD?

Yes a neuropsychological assessment can test for ADHD, however the types of tests used are different from a cognitive neuropsychological assessment. A cognitive neuropsychological assessment involves a comprehensive IQ test to better understand your cognitive profile, whereas an ADHD assessment typically relies on structured interviews.

How do I get a neuropsychological evaluation or assessment?

In Australia, there are several ways to access neuropsychological services.

You can ask your GP or specialist for a referral, which is often needed if you want to use funding through programs like the NDIS or compensation schemes.

Alternatively, you can book directly with a private neuropsychology clinic, such as Invictus Health, without a referral, though you would need to cover the full cost yourself.

Some public hospitals also offer neuropsychological assessments at no cost, but the waiting lists can be long.

If you have funding through the NDIS, WorkCover, TAC, DVA, or private insurance, it is helpful to check whether your assessment fees will be covered.

Are neuropsychologists covered by Medicare?

Unfortunately Medicare does not offer rebates for assessments. If you would like ongoing psychological treatment for therapy, you can get a mental health care plan from your GP to receive medicare rebates on single 50 minute sessions with a Clinical psychologist.

What are the areas of neurocognitive assessment dependent upon?

At Invictus Health, our experienced clinical psychologists help tailor a neurocognitive assessment that is right for your needs. Our neuropsychological assessments are designed based on several different factors, including:

  • The specific referral question/s
  • Any questions you or your doctor may have
  • Any specific health complaints
  • Any reported symptoms
  • Observations made by your Clinical Neuropsychologist

With the team at Invictus Health, you’ll know you’re in great hands and receive the high level of specialised service and care you’re after.

For neuropsychology assessments in Melbourne get in touch with our leading team of psychologists today! Our locations include Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Darwin, Ballarat, as well as Hobart, Tasmania.

How reliable are neuropsychological tests?

Neuropsychological tests used are scientifically validated and, where possible, based on Australian normative data. Clinical neuropsychologists follow guidelines set by the Australian Psychological Society (APS) and ensure that test interpretation is informed not only by scores but also by clinical interview, behavioural observations, and contextual factors. This process provides a robust and reliable picture of cognitive functioning.

Do I need a referral to do an assessment?

You do not always need a referral to have an assessment. It depends on your situation and the type of assessment you are seeking.

For example, assessments for ADHD or autism usually do not require a referral. However, if you are experiencing memory difficulties, a referral from your GP is usually necessary. This allows the psychologist to confirm that any underlying medical conditions, such as those identified through blood tests, have been ruled out by the doctor as possible causes of the memory issues.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Bring any medical records, previous test results, and a list of medications you’re taking. A referral from your GP helps us understand your history. We’ll guide you through what else we need when you call to book.

How long does testing take?

A comprehensive assessment usually requires three to four hours of testing. This includes time for breaks. It is typically completed in one day, however it can also be completed over two days or sometimes more.

The neuropsychologist also spends additional time scoring, analysing results, and preparing the report which can take up to ten hours.

Once the report is complete, a separate feedback session, typically lasting 30 to 60 minutes, is then held to explain the findings and recommendations.

What if I am not sure if I have ADHD or Autism?

If you are not sure if you need a full assessment for ADHD or Autism, we offer ADHD and Autism Screenings. This is one hour of testing with a neuropsychologist via telehealth to understand if a full assessment is needed.

Is my information kept private?

Yes. Privacy laws protect your data completely. Reports go only to those you authorize or as law requires.

What happens after testing?

You receive the original report. Copies go to your GP and authorised parties. Courts receive them as legal process demands.

Can I dispute the findings?

We explain results clearly and thoroughly. You can discuss concerns with your neuropsychologist or seek independent review if needed.

What if I'm in legal proceedings?

Our medico legal psychologists provide assessments for courts and tribunals. We address environmental factors and circumstances that strengthen your case.

What makes neuropsychology different?

Unlike general psychology, neuropsychology examines how brain function affects thinking, memory and behaviour. We use standardised tests to measure specific cognitive abilities and identify where changes have occurred. The results guide treatment and support decisions with scientific precision.
