Typing “neuropsychologist near me” into Google gives you a list of names and very little to judge them by. Neuropsychology is a small profession, the right clinician depends on your question, and the wait and the fee vary a lot between services.
This guide explains what a clinical neuropsychologist is, how to check their registration, what to ask before you book, and where Invictus Health sees people across Melbourne’s north, west, south-east and the city.
重點
- A clinical neuropsychologist is a registered psychologist with extra postgraduate training in how the brain affects thinking and behaviour. You can check anyone’s registration on the Ahpra public register.
- Only about 1,000 psychologists in Australia hold the clinical neuropsychology endorsement, so waits at public and university clinics often run to months or longer.
- Match the clinician to the question: memory and dementia, brain injury, ADHD or autism, learning difficulties, NDIS evidence, or a legal or capacity report.
- Ask who writes and reviews the report, how long it takes, whether they test effort and validity, and what the fee includes.
- Invictus Health has clinics in Preston, Footscray, Dandenong, Melbourne CBD, Doncaster and South Yarra, with home visits and telehealth. Appointments are usually available within 2 to 3 weeks.
What a neuropsychologist does, and who else you might need
A clinical neuropsychologist assesses how a person’s brain is working by measuring thinking skills such as memory, attention, language, speed and problem solving, and putting those results together with their history. The APS 臨床神經心理學家學院 describes the training as at least six years of university study plus supervised practice. The Psychology Board of Australia then grants an area of practice endorsement in clinical neuropsychology.
A neuropsychologist does not order brain scans, prescribe medication or provide ongoing therapy in most cases. A neurologist looks after the medical side of brain conditions, a psychiatrist prescribes, and a psychologist or counsellor provides therapy. Our article on neuropsychologist, psychologist or psychiatrist explains the differences.
Step 1: Check registration
Every psychologist in Australia must be registered with Ahpra, the national regulator. Search the Ahpra public register by name. The entry shows whether the person holds an endorsement in clinical neuropsychology, or is a registrar completing supervised practice towards it. A registrar’s work is supervised by an endorsed neuropsychologist, which is how the profession trains new clinicians. At Invictus Health every neuropsychology report is reviewed by Dr Judy Tang OAM before it is released.
Step 2: Match the clinician to your question
| Your question | What to look for | Where to read more |
|---|---|---|
| Memory changes, possible dementia or mild cognitive impairment | Experience with older adults and dementia diagnosis; clear advice on next steps | When to get your memory tested |
| Brain injury, stroke, concussion | Experience with rehabilitation and return to work; TAC and WorkSafe reporting | The first year after a brain injury |
| ADHD, autism or learning difficulties | Guideline-based assessment; ability to tell conditions apart | Adult ADHD assessment in Melbourne |
| NDIS access or plan review | Reports that describe functional impact in NDIA language | NDIS evidence and functional impact |
| Capacity for a will, power of attorney or money decisions | Experience with VCAT, courts and the Expert Witness Code of Conduct | What is a capacity assessment? |
| A child’s learning or development | A paediatric neuropsychologist and school-ready recommendations | When should a child have a cognitive assessment? |
Step 3: Ask these questions before you book
- Who will see me, and who writes and reviews the report?
- How long until the first appointment, and how long until the report?
- What does the fee include, and can I have it in writing? Does it cover the feedback session?
- Do you include tests of effort and validity? (Important for any legal or insurance matter.)
- Have you done this kind of report before, for the TAC, WorkSafe, the NDIA, a court or a tribunal?
- Can you work with an interpreter, or in my language? Can you come to my home or aged care facility?
- What happens if the results are normal, or do not answer my question?
Step 4: Weigh up the wait and the cost
Neuropsychology is a small profession. Psychology Board data from 2026 lists about 1,000 psychologists with the clinical neuropsychology endorsement in Australia, and fewer than 500 in Victoria. Public hospital clinics usually see only certain conditions, and university training clinics are low cost but often have waits of a year or more, or closed lists.
Private assessments in Australia cost about $1,800 to $3,600. At Invictus Health a neuropsychological assessment is from $3,300 to $3,600 depending on complexity, with appointments usually within 2 to 3 weeks and reports 2 to 3 weeks after that. Our guide to assessment costs shows what that fee covers and who else can pay, including the NDIS, TAC, WorkSafe and DVA.

常見問題
How do I find a good neuropsychologist in Melbourne?
Check the clinician on the Ahpra public register for an endorsement in clinical neuropsychology, match their experience to your question (memory, brain injury, ADHD or autism, NDIS, legal or capacity), and ask about the wait, the fee, who reviews the report and whether they test effort and validity. Invictus Health has clinics in Preston, Footscray, Dandenong, Melbourne CBD, Doncaster and South Yarra.
我要看神經心理學家,需要轉介單嗎?
No. You can book directly with Invictus Health. A GP, specialist, lawyer, insurer or NDIS support coordinator can also refer you, and a referral letter helps us plan the assessment.
What is the difference between a neuropsychologist and a psychologist?
Both are registered psychologists. A clinical neuropsychologist has extra postgraduate training in how the brain affects thinking and behaviour, and specialises in assessment of memory, attention and other cognitive skills. A general or clinical psychologist mainly provides therapy.
How long is the wait to see a neuropsychologist in Melbourne?
Public and university clinics often have waits of many months, and some lists are closed. At Invictus Health assessment appointments are usually available within 2 to 3 weeks, and reports are ready 2 to 3 weeks after the appointment.
Can a neuropsychologist come to my home?
Yes. Invictus Health offers home visits and visits to aged care facilities across Melbourne, and travels to regional Victoria. Tell us when you book so we can plan the session.

Preston serves Melbourne’s north, Footscray the inner west, Dandenong the south-east, and we also have rooms in the Melbourne CBD, Doncaster and South Yarra. Our locations page lists every clinic with its address and parking details.
