Adult autism assessment in Melbourne: how it works, what it costs and who should do it

More Melbourne adults than ever are asking whether they might be autistic, often after a child’s diagnosis, a burnout, or years of feeling out of step with other people. There is no Medicare item for adult autism assessment and no GP pathway, so most people pay privately and the wait at many clinics runs to months.

This guide explains what a guideline-based adult autism assessment involves, what it costs in Melbourne, what the report should contain, and how the process works at Invictus Health in Preston, Footscray, Dandenong and Melbourne CBD.

重點

  • At Invictus Health an adult autism assessment is $2,100, takes about 3 to 4 hours, and the report is ready in 2 weeks. No GP referral is needed. A combined autism and ADHD assessment is $2,700.
  • Melbourne clinics that publish prices charge roughly $1,650 to $2,700 for an adult autism assessment.
  • Australia’s National Guideline for autism assessment calls for a detailed interview, standardised tools, information about your childhood where possible, and a report that explains the reasons behind the conclusion.
  • Many adults, especially women, are diagnosed late. ABS data shows the number of autistic females rose by about 95% between 2018 and 2022.
  • A diagnosis does not automatically mean NDIS funding. The NDIA asks for evidence of how a condition affects daily life, so a report that describes your support needs matters as much as the label.

Why adults seek an autism assessment

Common reasons people come to us include difficulty with social situations that others seem to find easy, sensory overload, a strong need for routine, exhaustion from “masking”, or a diagnosis in their child that made them look at their own life differently. Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows about 290,900 autistic Australians in 2022, with the number of autistic females up about 95% since 2018. Many of those are adults diagnosed for the first time.

An assessment can answer the question properly, explain your strengths and challenges, and open the door to workplace adjustments, study support, counselling that fits you, and in some cases NDIS funding. Our article on signs of autism in adults covers what to look for.

What an adult autism assessment in Melbourne costs

Option Typical cost Notes
Melbourne private clinics that publish prices About $1,650 to $2,700 Most clinics do not publish a price

Invictus Health NDIS autism assessment $3,541.86 Billed at the NDIS price limit, 14 hours

Medicare does not rebate an adult autism assessment. Medicare items for autism assessment exist only for people under 25 referred by a paediatrician or psychiatrist. Some private health extras policies pay part of the fee. Our guide to assessment costs explains what the fee covers and the payment options.

What the National Guideline requires

Australia’s National Guideline for the Assessment and Diagnosis of Autism (Autism CRC) sets the standard that good clinics follow. The main elements are:

  • a detailed clinical interview about your history, your current life and how your traits affect you
  • standardised assessment tools, used by a clinician trained in them
  • information from someone who knew you as a child, where that is possible and you agree
  • consideration of other explanations and co-occurring conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, trauma or intellectual disability
  • a report that states the conclusion, the evidence for each criterion, your strengths and support needs, and practical recommendations

The guideline also says people should receive their findings within three months of the first appointment. At Invictus Health the report is ready 2 weeks after your assessment.

How the assessment works at Invictus Health

  1. Booking. Contact us or book online. No GP referral is needed. We send you questionnaires to complete before the appointment, and one for a parent, sibling or partner if you are comfortable with that.
  2. The assessment. About 3 to 4 hours with a psychologist, in person at Preston, Footscray, Dandenong or Melbourne CBD. It includes a structured interview and standardised measures. Breaks are built in, and you can bring a support person.
  3. The report. Within 2 weeks you receive a written report that explains the conclusion and the reasons for it, in language a workplace, university or the NDIA can use.
  4. Feedback. We go through the findings with you and talk about what happens next. Our article on life after an adult diagnosis is a good starting point.

Autism, ADHD or both

Autism and ADHD often occur together, and the overlap can be confusing: both can involve trouble with attention, organisation and sensory load. If you have questions about both, a combined assessment ($2,700) answers them in one process rather than two. If you only want to know whether a full assessment is worth it, our $700 screening is a shorter first step.

What a diagnosis can and cannot do

A diagnosis can help you understand yourself, get adjustments at work or study, and access autism-specific support. It does not automatically mean NDIS funding. The NDIA asks for evidence of how a condition affects your daily life, and the Australian Government passed the NDIS Amendment Bill in 2026, with changes to access arrangements to come after 1 January 2028. That is why our reports describe how autism affects your daily life, not just whether you meet the criteria. Our guide to NDIS evidence for autism explains what the NDIA looks for.

常見問題

How much does an adult autism assessment cost in Melbourne?

Melbourne clinics that publish prices charge roughly $1,650 to $2,700 for an adult autism assessment. At Invictus Health the fee is $2,100, which includes about 3 to 4 hours of assessment, a written report within 2 weeks and a feedback session. A combined autism and ADHD assessment is $2,700.

Do I need a referral for an adult autism assessment?

No. You can book directly with Invictus Health. There is no GP pathway or Medicare item for adult autism assessment in Australia, so a referral is not required, although a GP letter can be helpful.

How long does an adult autism assessment take?

At Invictus Health the assessment takes about 3 to 4 hours, in person, with breaks as needed. The written report is ready 2 weeks later. Questionnaires are completed before the appointment.

Can autism be diagnosed in adults, and in women?

Yes. Autism is lifelong, and many adults are diagnosed for the first time in their 20s, 30s, 40s or later. Women and girls are often missed because they mask their traits. A good assessment takes this into account.

Will an autism diagnosis get me NDIS funding?

Not automatically. The NDIS looks at how a condition affects your daily life, not just the diagnosis, and access rules are set to change after 1 January 2028. Our reports describe your support needs so they are useful if you apply.

Can I do the autism assessment online?

No. Autism assessments at Invictus Health are done in person at our Melbourne clinics. Australia’s National Guideline says autism assessments should include in-person contact. Tell us when you book if you need an interpreter or any adjustments to the session.
