Many people feel relief at finally having an explanation. Others feel grief, anger or uncertainty. Often it is a mix of all of these.

There is no single right way to respond, and no need to rush. It can also bring up sadness about the support they did not get earlier.

Research reflects this. In an Australian study, 11 autistic adults diagnosed within the past six months used a self-guided resource about autism. They described a sense of belonging through community and representation. They also described both relief and grief over years of masking, and challenges in speaking up for themselves and educating others (Edwards and colleagues, 2025).

Another Australian study of 143 autistic adults found that, on average, people reported a positive impact of diagnosis on self-understanding and wellbeing. Access to services was the exception. Better self-understanding was linked with better wellbeing, partly through lower internalised stigma, meaning negative beliefs about autism that a person has absorbed (Huang and colleagues, 2023).

Give yourself time. It is common for feelings to shift over weeks and months.

Some people find it helps to look back at their life through a new lens. Past struggles at school, at work or in friendships may make more sense. So may strengths, such as deep knowledge of an interest, creativity or a strong sense of fairness. Writing some of this down can be a useful way to process it.

Make sense of your assessment report

Your report is a useful tool. Read it when you have the energy, and write down questions as you go. You might want to ask your clinician:

What are my main strengths and challenges?

Which recommendations should I focus on first?

Were any other conditions considered, such as anxiety or a learning disorder?

What should I share with my GP, employer or university?

Reports can be long and full of technical terms. It is fine to read them in parts, or to ask someone you trust to read them with you. If something in the report does not match your experience, raise it with your clinician.

Keep a copy of your report somewhere safe. You may need parts of it for your GP, for work or study adjustments, or for funding applications.

Learn about yourself and connect with others

Learning about ADHD and autism from reliable sources helps many people. Look for information from health services, peak bodies and researchers, and from ADHD and autistic people themselves. Peer groups and online communities led by neurodivergent people can offer understanding that is hard to find elsewhere.

You may also think about language. Many autistic people prefer identity-first language, such as autistic person. Some prefer person-first language, such as person with autism. Some people use terms like neurodivergent or AuDHD, which describes being both autistic and ADHD. Use the words that feel right for you.

Short, reliable content can be a gentle place to start. Our Brain Pops podcast has short episodes on brain science.

Support and treatment options

After an ADHD diagnosis

The Australian ADHD guideline recommends that cognitive behavioural interventions be offered to adults with ADHD. It also says ADHD coaching could be considered as part of a treatment plan.

Medication is another option. Healthdirect notes that the rules about who can prescribe ADHD medicines vary between states and territories (Healthdirect). Your GP can explain the pathway where you live. Medication is a personal choice, and many people combine it with practical strategies. It can also help to review sleep, exercise and other health factors with your GP, as these affect attention and mood for everyone.

After an autism diagnosis

Autism is a lifelong difference in how a person experiences the world, so support focuses on wellbeing and quality of life rather than changing who you are. Useful supports can include:

understanding your sensory needs and adjusting your environment

managing energy and recovery, for example with energy accounting

therapy for co-occurring anxiety, depression or trauma, if needed

peer support from other autistic adults

Work, study and the NDIS

You can choose whether to tell your employer or place of study. If your diagnosis does not affect your work or safety, you usually do not have to share it. If you would like changes, such as written instructions or a quieter space, you can ask for reasonable adjustments. Our guides on telling your employer and university support explain more.

Some people ask about the NDIS. To be eligible, you must usually be under 65 when you apply, meet residency rules, and have a disability that is likely to be permanent and substantially affects your ability to do daily life activities (NDIS). Eligibility is based on functional impact and support needs, so a diagnosis alone does not mean you will be eligible.

Look after your wellbeing

An adult diagnosis often comes after years of pushing through. Many people notice how tired they are once they stop masking or start to understand their limits. Try to:

reduce demands where you can for a while

notice what restores you, and do more of it

unmask gradually, in places where you feel safe

talk with people you trust about what you have learned

Relationships and family

A diagnosis can also change relationships. Partners and family members may have their own questions, and learning together can help. Some couples use the diagnosis to rethink how they share household tasks, plan time together or handle conflict. Relatives may also recognise traits in themselves, since ADHD and autism often run in families (Healthdirect). If conversations feel stuck, relationship counselling can offer a neutral space to talk.

If you feel very low, hopeless or have thoughts of harming yourself, please reach out for help.
