These children are often described as twice-exceptional, or 2e.<\/p>\n<p>Twice-exceptional children can be puzzling. They may seem brilliant one moment and stuck the next. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.act.gov.au\/education-and-training\/life-at-school-and-college\/gifted-and-talented-students\">ACT Government<\/a> explains that under this model:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Giftedness<\/strong> refers to natural ability in the top 10% of children of the same age. This can be in areas such as intellectual, creative, social or perceptual ability.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Talent<\/strong> refers to outstanding performance in a field, such as academics, the arts or sport. It develops from ability through learning, practice and support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/education.nsw.gov.au\/teaching-and-learning\/high-potential-and-gifted-education\/supporting-educators\/assess-and-identify\">NSW Department of Education<\/a> describes high potential and gifted students as those whose abilities are well above same-age peers in one or more domains: intellectual, creative, social-emotional and physical.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, being gifted is about potential. It does not always show up as high marks. A gifted child who is unwell, anxious, not challenged or managing a disability may perform well below their ability at school.<\/p>\n<h2>What does twice-exceptional mean?<\/h2>\n<p>A twice-exceptional child is gifted and also has a disability or learning difference. The ACT Government gives examples such as ADHD, autism, dyslexia and dyscalculia.<\/p>\n<p>In a 2014 paper, <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/0016986214534976\">Reis, Baum and Burke<\/a> proposed a working definition of twice-exceptional learners. They argued these students need programs that develop their gifts while also supporting their areas of difficulty.<\/p>\n<p>Being 2e is not a diagnosis in itself. It describes a profile that combines high ability with another need. Recognising both parts helps adults respond to the whole child, rather than focusing only on marks or only on difficulties.<\/p>\n<h2>Why twice-exceptional children are often missed<\/h2>\n<p>A 2e child&#8217;s strengths and challenges can mask each other. There are three common patterns.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Strengths hide the difficulty.<\/strong> A bright child with dyslexia may use strong reasoning and memory to get by. Their reading problems are not noticed until the work gets harder.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The difficulty hides the strengths.<\/strong> A child with ADHD or autism may be seen only in terms of behaviour or social challenges. The NSW Department of Education notes that a disability may exclude or disguise signs of high potential.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Each cancels the other out.<\/strong> The child performs at an average level, so nobody sees a reason to look closer. They may still be struggling or under-challenged.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Behaviour can also be misread. A gifted child may be restless or switched off because work is too easy, which can look like ADHD. A child with ADHD may also be gifted. A careful assessment can help separate these possibilities.<\/p>\n<h2>Signs your child may be twice-exceptional<\/h2>\n<p>Every child is different, but parents and teachers often notice:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a big gap between how well a child talks and reasons, and what they can produce in writing<\/li>\n<li>advanced vocabulary or knowledge, with surprising trouble in spelling, handwriting, reading or maths<\/li>\n<li>deep, intense interests and strong focus on some tasks, but great difficulty with others<\/li>\n<li>frustration, avoidance or meltdowns around schoolwork<\/li>\n<li>exhaustion after school, even when marks look fine<\/li>\n<li>uneven development, such as adult-like thinking alongside younger social or emotional skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/raisingchildren.net.au\/preschoolers\/play-learning\/gifted-talented-children\/behaviour-social-development\">Raising Children Network<\/a> notes that gifted children often have strong emotions and opinions, may set very high standards for themselves, and can become frustrated when they cannot meet them. In a 2e child, these traits can combine with the challenges of ADHD, autism or a learning disorder.<\/p>\n<h2>How assessment helps<\/h2>\n<p>The NSW Department of Education says schools should use multiple measures to identify high potential. Relying on a single measure can mean some groups are missed, including students with disability.<\/p>\n<p>For individual children, <a href=\"https:\/\/raisingchildren.net.au\/preschoolers\/play-learning\/gifted-talented-children\/identification-of-gifted-children\">Raising Children Network<\/a> suggests seeing a psychologist experienced in giftedness for an IQ test and report. It notes that IQ tests are most suitable for children over 6, although some children can manage them from about 4.<\/p>\n<p>For a possible 2e child, a broader assessment is often more useful. It may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cognitive testing<\/strong> to map strengths and weaknesses across reasoning, language, memory and processing speed<\/li>\n<li><strong>Academic testing<\/strong> of reading, writing and maths<\/li>\n<li><strong>Assessment of attention<\/strong> and, if relevant, ADHD<\/li>\n<li><strong>Autism assessment<\/strong> if there are social communication or sensory differences<\/li>\n<li><strong>Social and emotional wellbeing<\/strong>, including anxiety and self-esteem<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The pattern matters more than any single number. A child&#8217;s overall IQ score can hide very large differences between areas. For example, a child might have very strong verbal reasoning but much slower processing speed. That gap can explain why they understand everything in class but struggle to finish written work.<\/p>\n<h2>Supporting a twice-exceptional child<\/h2>\n<p>The NSW Department of Education says 2e learners need programs that focus on talent development and strengths, while also making reasonable adjustments for their disability. Helpful approaches include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>offering challenge in strength areas, not only extra help in weaker areas<\/li>\n<li>making adjustments, such as extra time, assistive technology or reduced written load<\/li>\n<li>teaching organisation and study strategies directly<\/li>\n<li>supporting emotional wellbeing and a positive sense of identity<\/li>\n<li>working as a team with the school, and reviewing plans regularly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Working with the school<\/h3>\n<p>Share the assessment report with your child&#8217;s teachers, if you are comfortable doing so, and ask for a meeting to plan support. Useful questions include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How can my child be extended in their areas of strength?<\/li>\n<li>What adjustments will help with the areas they find hard?<\/li>\n<li>Who will check how the plan is going, and when?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Wellbeing and identity<\/h3>\n<p>Many 2e children feel different from their classmates and can be very hard on themselves. Some mask their difficulties to avoid looking less capable. Watch for signs of anxiety, low mood or school refusal, and seek help early if you notice them.<\/p>\n<p>It helps to talk with your child about how their brain works. Giftedness and ADHD can occur together. High ability can help a child cope for a while, which may delay recognition of ADHD.
