So it is a fair question to ask whether you need the extra testing.<\/p>\n<p>In short, many people do not, but some people gain a lot from it. It usually looks at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>reasoning with words and with visual information<\/li>\n<li>working memory, which is holding and using information in your head<\/li>\n<li>processing speed, which is how quickly you take in and respond to information<\/li>\n<li>attention, planning and organisation<\/li>\n<li>learning and remembering new information<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The result is a profile of your strengths and the areas you find harder. Similarly, the Australian Psychological Society describes this as a detailed profile of strengths and weaknesses. Our article on <a href=\"\/resources\/understanding-neuropsychological-report-scores\/\">understanding scores and percentiles<\/a> explains how results are reported.<\/p>\n<h2>Is a cognitive assessment required for a diagnosis?<\/h2>\n<h3>Autism<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autismcrc.com.au\/best-practice\/sites\/default\/files\/resources\/Assessment_and_Diagnosis_Guideline.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australia&#8217;s National Guideline for the assessment and diagnosis of autism<\/a> lists cognitive assessment as one option when another condition, such as an intellectual disability or learning disorder, may be part of the picture. However, it does not make formal cognitive testing a requirement for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>The clinician does need to consider your general thinking ability and developmental level. The diagnostic criteria ask clinicians to say whether autism comes with or without an intellectual impairment, and to tell autism apart from intellectual disability. For many teenagers and adults, school, study and work history give enough information to do this without formal testing. By contrast, for young children, or where learning has been hard, testing is more often useful.<\/p>\n<h3>ADHD<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/adhdguideline.aadpa.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australia&#8217;s ADHD Clinical Practice Guideline<\/a> says ADHD symptoms must be assessed in the context of a person&#8217;s age, developmental level and intellectual ability. It also reports a review that found cognitive and psychoeducational tests did not make ADHD diagnosis more accurate. ADHD is diagnosed through a clinical assessment against the diagnostic criteria, using a detailed history and information from more than one person or setting.<\/p>\n<p>In short, cognitive tests do not tell us whether someone has ADHD. However, Medicare does not cover most of these assessments. Some private health policies help with psychology costs, so check with your fund. If cost is a barrier, please talk to us.
