Autism is lifelong, and autistic people have a wide range of support needs. Some need help with many daily tasks. Others need little support, or need support mainly at certain times.

The NDIS is designed for people whose disability substantially reduces their ability to do everyday tasks. So the NDIA looks at two things: what the diagnosis says about support needs, and how autism affects daily life.

List A, List B and autism support levels

The NDIA uses lists of conditions to help make access decisions. Its Applying to the NDIS guideline describes two that matter for autism.

List A

List A includes autism diagnosed by a specialist multidisciplinary team, paediatrician, psychiatrist or clinical psychologist experienced in autism assessment. The diagnosis must use current DSM criteria and assess the person as Level 2 (requiring substantial support) or Level 3 (requiring very substantial support).

If you have a List A condition, the NDIA says it will likely decide you meet the disability requirements. You still need to meet the age and residence rules.

List B

Autism that does not meet the List A severity criteria is on List B. This includes autism assessed at Level 1 (requiring support). For List B conditions, the NDIA will likely accept that the impairment is permanent. But you still need evidence that autism substantially reduces your ability to do everyday tasks.

A note about support levels

DSM-5 support levels describe how much support a person needed at the time of assessment. They can change over time and in different settings. A support level on its own does not describe a whole person, so a functional report can add a lot.

Evidence that helps an autism access request

A clear diagnostic report

Your diagnostic report should state the diagnosis, the criteria used, the support level for each area, and who made the diagnosis. The National Guideline for the assessment and diagnosis of autism in Australia describes both a diagnostic evaluation and a comprehensive needs assessment. The needs assessment looks at a person’s strengths, challenges and support needs, which is useful for the NDIS too.

Functional evidence

The NDIS lists example assessment tools for autism, including the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales (Vineland-III), WHODAS 2.0 and, for people aged 16 and under, the PEDI-CAT. These measure everyday skills such as communication, daily living and social functioning.

Useful functional evidence describes the six areas the NDIA looks at: communicating, socialising, learning, moving around, self-care and managing your life. It should include real examples, how often help is needed, and who gives it.

Other helpful information

reports from speech pathologists, occupational therapists or psychologists who know you or your child

school reports, individual learning plans or letters from teachers

a written statement from you or your family about a typical week

details of any co-occurring conditions, such as intellectual disability, ADHD or anxiety, and how they add to support needs.

Questions to ask your clinician

Before you ask a professional for a report or letter, it can help to ask:

Will the report state the support level for social communication and for restricted or repetitive behaviours?

Will it describe how autism affects each of the six everyday areas?

Will it include a standardised measure of adaptive or daily functioning?

Will it say whether support needs are likely to be lifelong?

Will it describe what support has been tried and what helped?

Not every report needs to do all of these. Together, your evidence should give the NDIA a full picture.

Evidence for autistic adults

Many adults are diagnosed later in life. Some have learned to mask, which means hiding or changing autistic traits to fit in. Masking can make support needs hard to see from the outside.

If you are an autistic adult applying for the NDIS, your evidence can explain the cost of getting through the day. For example, it might describe:

needing long periods of recovery after work, study or social contact

shutdowns or meltdowns, and what helps

help needed with planning, paperwork, cooking or appointments

sensory differences that limit where you can go.

Evidence should be honest about both what you can do and what it takes to do it.

Young children: early childhood approach and Thriving Kids

For children younger than 9, the NDIS early childhood approach is the usual starting point. The NDIS guide to the early childhood approach says early childhood partners can help families even if a child is not eligible for the NDIS. A child does not need a diagnosis for an early childhood partner to help.

Changes coming for young autistic children

Australian governments are rolling out a new program called Thriving Kids from 1 October 2026. It is for children aged 8 and under with developmental delay or autism and low to moderate support needs, and it is being phased in until 1 January 2028.

The Department of Health, Disability and Ageing says that from 1 January 2028, children aged 8 and under who apply for the NDIS will be assessed against new criteria. Those with developmental delay or autism and low to moderate support needs will no longer be eligible. Children with high support needs can still access the NDIS. Children already in the NDIS before 1 January 2028 will continue to be reassessed under the earlier criteria.

These changes are still being put in place, and details may change. Check with your early childhood partner or the NDIS for the latest information.

How Invictus Health can help

Our psychologists provide autism assessments for children, teenagers and adults, following the National Guideline. Where helpful, a report can describe support needs and functional impact, not only the diagnosis.

We also provide NDIS assessments and reports, including standardised functional and cognitive assessments. Our NDIS applications service can help you work out what evidence you already have. You can book most assessments without a GP referral. See our fees page for costs.

An assessment adds information to your application.
