Sex therapy

Talking about sex is hard – which is exactly why a confidential, non-judgmental space with a trained professional makes such a difference. For individuals and couples, of every orientation and identity.

What sex therapy actually is

Sex therapy is talk therapy focused on sexual wellbeing. There is no physical examination and no touch involved – just structured, professional conversation about an area of life most of us were never taught to talk about.

Sexual concerns are extremely common, and they sit at the intersection of body, mind, relationship and culture. Stress, trauma, medication, hormones, shame, religious upbringing, body image and relationship dynamics can all play a part. A sex therapist helps you untangle which threads matter for you, and works with you on practical, evidence-based strategies.

Sessions are available for individuals and couples, in person at our Preston clinic or via telehealth across Australia. Our approach is inclusive of all genders, sexualities, relationship structures and cultural backgrounds.

Process

What happens during your counselling journey

First contact

You call or fill out our form. Tell us what's happening and what you need. We listen without judgment and answer your questions about how we work.

Assessment session

We meet and talk through your situation in detail. This helps us understand your challenges and decide on the best approach for you moving forward.

Regular sessions

You attend regular sessions where we develop strategies and skills tailored to your needs. Between sessions, you practise what you've learned in daily life.

Moving forward

As you gain confidence and tools, sessions may reduce in frequency. You'll always have access to support when you need it, whether that's months or years later.

Frequently asked questions

Is sex therapy awkward?

The first ten minutes can be – then it usually isn’t. Our therapists talk about sex all day; nothing you bring will shock them. They set a professional, matter-of-fact tone that makes the conversation easier than you expect.

Does sex therapy involve any physical contact?

No, never. Sex therapy is talk-based. Any practical exercises are discussed in session and done privately at home, at your own discretion.

Should I come alone or with my partner?

Either works. Some concerns are best worked on individually first; others move faster with both partners in the room. We’ll help you decide in the first session, and the format can change as you go.

Do I need a medical check first?

Not necessarily, but for concerns like pain or erectile difficulties we may recommend you also see your GP, since medical factors are sometimes involved. We’re happy to work alongside your doctor or specialist.

Is it confidential?

Completely. What you share stays between you and your therapist, with rare exceptions only when someone’s safety is at risk.

What does it cost?

Individual sessions are $80-$120 and couples sessions $136.50-$195. No GP referral is needed. Medicare does not currently provide rebates for counsellors.
